I wrote this while visiting enlightened friends in Quebec City. I have realized since then that there is even more to this Paradox of Now.
Paradox of Now
You have a body. It keeps evolving. I mean you don’t fit into your baby shoes now. You have a mind. I trust new perspectives unfold.
Of course, the mind is complex. There is the working mind that reminds you when to do certain things, like… turn the burner off before the smoke alarm beeps, and then there’s the mind that is somewhere from the past, attitudes and beliefs that are no longer relevant to who you are now. Although they kept you safe when needed. And then there are the parts that share with you wisdom that gives you insight and intuition.
What part are you in this very moment? This is the paradox of now. you are in this very moment, but whether you are focused on a past template of your mind or you are present in the here and now to sensations inside you, feelings inside you, and the environment all around you; this is up for grabs.
There is an exercise I do in one of the anatomy classes I give. I ask the student to go outside the room and then stick their head inside the door frame. I ask, are you in the room? Next, I ask them to go outside the room and put their pelvis inside the door frame. Same question and activity, different body part. Try it and discover…Where are you?
Internet
Perhaps you are on the internet, your phone, tablet or computer. And perhaps you are not present to your body. Yes, the body ‘disappears’ when you are in meditation or sitting in one position on your digital devices. Your mind is in the ‘Cloud.’
Why is that? Because your body’s sensory cells, proprioceptors, do not register where you are in space when you do not move. Does moving your finger count? You tell me.
The only way to be healthy is to balance being in the body with being still. Otherwise there are issues. You probably already experience some of them. Having a balanced life has a new meaning in this age of computer devices.
Not the only Challenge
The paradox of Now includes the biological reality that you are aging. Your body is getting older, and like me, you may not be able to jump as high as a grand piano, even if you have gotten a smaller piano. What to do?
Healing and health are always available if you and your body are available. Do not get so out of balance that there is no hope. Writing this reminds me of a client’s brother, who sent him to me. I only saw this person once.
It was very dramatic. He said he drank ten diet Cokes a day…and barely slept. I rebalanced his physical system as best as I could. And as gently or maybe not so gently told him of the potential consequences.
I heard later he turned his life around. He became a Buddhist and changed his lifestyle. But two years later, he died. The changes came too late. I am happy he made them. The moral of this anecdote: don’t let the changes you need to make happen too late.
Tweaking
You may have realized, if you are reading this blog, that as time goes by, you need to ‘tweak’ your eating, sleeping, mental, and medicinal or recreational drug habits. Ultimate Frisbee may have to be set aside if you don’t want another knee operation.
The Ultimate Paradox
The paradox of now is that you can gently or abruptly shift everything. I mean, you can become a blonde tomorrow, just book an appointment with the hair salon. Other changes take longer and more persistence. Repetition is key.
