The healing power of meditation is crystal clear. And you are already doing it! You may think you cannot meditate because of misconceptions. You may think that meditation is about not having thoughts. They will never stop, though they may slow down. However, if you have ever been absorbed in the beauty of a flower or your cat, dog, lover or creative project…or simply your work, you have been meditating. This is a form of samadhi, in which you are absorbed by and connected to an object with a sense of oneness.
How I Discovered Meditation as an Artist Model
I discovered meditation as an artist model at university. Sitting naked holding a pose for twenty minutes at a time at a major art school in Los Angeles or in artists’ studio group classes. Twenty minutes, a short break and back into the pose. These were sessions that went on for hours. Once, I counted eleven hours.
I would miss modelling when I wasn’t doing it. Why? Because my mind would unwind and I would wind up in a blissful, happy place. One spiritual master said to me, “Happiness is your True nature.”
You might call the modeling as enforced meditation. It did pay my tuition at U.C.L.A. And it was a pleasure. Holding a pose held the body in relative stillness. Your body is always pumping blood and breathing, etc. The only type of modelling I did not like was when I had to hold my eyes still for a portrait. And of course that’s what you do on computers….very dysfunctional, meaning not good for your well-being.
Work Meditation: Finding Presence in Everyday Tasks
One pointed attention on your work is a form of meditation. Being present in your life is your life meditation. You are already there if you want to be! Be aware of awareness.
Creative Meditation: Accessing Awareness Through What You Love
Do what you love! I love to write, so I am sharing my insights from a life which has taken me around the world to the spaciousness of consciousness which connects me to what is inside and all around me in the universe.
The secret is, it has always been there. It is already inside you! You may have thoughts which are restricting how you are being with awareness. Biggest restriction is you think you cannot meditate because you have an unrealistic idea about what meditation is.
Meditation Techniques for Healing: From the Manual
Below is a selection on how you can heal with meditation from my meditation manual. If you enjoy it and would like a copy of the manual just contact me.
The Key to Healing: Relaxation, Awareness, and Self-Trust
“The key to healing yourself of chronic and acute illness, trauma, discomfort or stress is relaxation. So just relax and let go…accept what is…you are not the body. You have a body. Your consciousness includes your body, but you are not limited to the physical body, nor do you need to consciously control your own healing process. Your physical body is designed to heal itself. You need only relax and listen to your inner wisdom, even as you acknowledge your feelings, both physical sensations and emotions. This attentiveness to inner signals is deeply connected to somatic perception and body awareness, the practice of consciously tuning in to what your body is communicating.
You need only relax and acknowledge the thoughts
and beliefs which have contributed to your disease or discomfort.
Whatever you are experiencing is subject to change. There may be a shift
in perception, in the way you understand what is happening, which in turn may
bring a shift in the condition itself. Simply being in a meditative state of
awareness may shift the condition.
Being unwell or injured is a way your body has to have you relax and let go…to take time out. It is sometimes the only way to get you to acknowledge the deeper truth of your being. When you connect with the source, pure awareness, you are connected to everything. The everything has been supporting you, is never against you, and is present for you unconditionally. You are Love, and the substance of beingness is Love. And one thing more…the source is alive with energy….more than enough energy to heal you.” This deep reconnection with the source is itself the process of awakening through meditation practice.
In The Meantime, if you need support in your healing process, Body Being & Heart has personal sessions, courses, programs and retreats. Contact me for more information about what is right for you!
