Healing is a dynamic process. And it is and can be a spiritual process. If you feel called to explore this for yourself, you can map your personal healing journey and discover what that process looks like uniquely for you. My beloved sister created the creative healing image featured in this blog. Later, she added a description of her healing journey with back surgery.

I was struck by her description of her artwork, how the truths she expresses are so universally true! In my family, everyone has had a different religion, and sometimes they change. My wonderful sister, Alexandra Piacenza, has also written a marvellous book, ‘Spirit to Spirit Goes: A Pilgrimage from East to West,’ available on Amazon
Creative Healing: A Sister’s Artistic Journey
Here is her description of her image above.
Central Figure
The central figure is standing atop the waves of emotion, moving with them but not being overwhelmed or drowned by them. (Thank you, Jesus, for your living metaphor.) This requires strength (personal determination) and the natural balance that comes from a focus on “heart values”. This embodied balance is also at the heart of somatic healing for chronic conditions, where the body’s own wisdom becomes the guide.
Weather Symbolism: Happy Times and Stormy Times
At the top are the two types of perceived weather, the happy times and the stormy times. This is a recognition that both are needed for growth, symbolized by the figure’s leafy hair. The extra pair of arms is the power to prevent clinging to either.
The Snake
The snake represents time – the tail end being the past and the head being the future. When we dwell in the past, we are grabbing the wrong end of things. When we worry about the future, we are essentially biting ourselves in the you-know-what. These two hands are keeping the past and future in their rightful place. I like the fact that all the hands echo the shape of the snake’s head – this is the energy necessary to maintain personal boundaries.(“Be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove.”)
Attitudes of Judgment: Rejection and Desire
The arms and hands at the bottom are attitudes of judgment: The lavender hand is rejecting those things in life I don’t want, can’t accept or judge to be bad or wrong. The yellow hand is grasping at things I want, it is acquisitiveness and personal desires.
Living in Present Time: The Core Healing Message
Overall, natural human tendencies come from surrendering to false dualities. These are balanced and/or subdued by maintaining one’s attention in present time: the pure white egg in which we rest our consciousness. Only from this egg or seed is the “next” present-time reality created. For those ready to deepen this work, exploring
body-based healing beyond creative work opens another powerful dimension of this journey.
The Childlike Quality That Makes This Art Powerful
I was thinking about how this picture has the quality of a child’s drawing. At first I I thought, “Oh I wish I had more drawing skill,” but then I thought, actually it is the child’s quality of being exactly who they are right this minute that is the whole point.”
“Hope does not disappoint.” – Romans 5:5
