What Is Somatic Therapy?

A Guide to How Somatic Therapy Works — and What to Expect in Montreal

Somatic therapy is a body-centred approach to healing that works directly with the nervous system—not just the mind—to release trauma, chronic stress, and emotional patterns held in the body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it integrates breath, sensation awareness, movement, and sometimes touch to help the body complete stress responses and return to balance. This integration of body and energy reflects a broader understanding of working directly with the nervous system as a pathway to lasting healing.

In Montreal and worldwide, interest in somatic therapy is growing as more people realize that insight alone does not always resolve anxiety, burnout, or trauma. Many are turning toward approaches that include the body—because that is often where these patterns are stored. This is also why energy-based modalities like Reiki, while valuable, may leave a gap—insight alone does not always resolve what the nervous system continues to hold.

The gap talk therapy cannot always fill

Traditional therapy works through cognition, language, and reflection. This “top-down” processing can be powerful, but it may not fully resolve symptoms rooted in the nervous system and literally in your body tissue.

People often say: “I understand why I feel this way, but my body still reacts. Though I can talk about it, nothing changes. My anxiety feels physical, not just mental.”

Somatic therapy addresses this gap by working “bottom-up,” directly with physiological states rather than only thoughts.

Signs You May Benefit from Somatic Therapy

Clients, particularly anxious women with physical symptoms often come in with: persistent anxiety or panic symptoms; chronic tension, pain, or fatigue without clear medical cause; burnout and nervous system exhaustion; a sense of disconnection from their body or even trauma symptoms such as hypervigilance or shutdown.

These experiences are often signs of a dysregulated nervous system rather than a lack of insight or willpower.

What Is Body-Centered Somatic Therapy and How Does It Work?

Body Centered Somatic therapy is an umbrella term for therapeutic approaches that focus on the body as a primary pathway for healing. It draws from neuroscience, trauma research, and modalities like Somatic Experiencing, developed by Peter Levine, and Upledger Institute’s SomatoEmotional Release Work.

Core principles include: the body stores unresolved stress and trauma (“body memory”); the nervous system can become stuck in survival states (fight, flight, freeze); healing happens through gentle awareness, not force or re-exposure; the body has an innate capacity to regulate and heal when supported. This belief that the body has an innate capacity to heal is central to somatic work and to a broader understanding of how healing unfolds from within.

Researchers like Bessel van der Kolk have emphasized that trauma is not just remembered cognitively—it is experienced physically.
